IWC Bazaar

Every year, the IWC has a truly International Bazaar. Each country which is represented, sells items from their particular home country at their respective tables. Following in last years footsteps, this year the American table will sell “Precious Pantry Items”, meaning things which you wish you had in your pantry, but things you don’t have because they are either not available, or hard to find in Moscow. These are the things you wish you could run to Kroger and pick up for that awesome recipe, but you can’t.

In order for the American table to be well-represented, and for our portion of the Bazaar to be a success, we need your help. In fact, we can’t possibly do this without you!
Would you PLEASE consider bringing back a few items for us to sell? For your convenience, a “Shopping List” is available. This is certainly not an all inclusive list, so please feel free to bring anything else you would like to bring. You know better than we do the items you really miss when you are here. Bear in mind that the date of the Bazaar is the first week of December, so perhaps you could think in terms of the holidays.

We realize that space in your luggage is a valuable commodity, so please don’t feel as if you have to buy everything. Most of these items are quite small. If all of us would consider bringing back only 3 to 4 items, the American table will be very successful!

We will be collecting the items at the AWO meetings beginning in September.

Nastenka News

The Nastenka Foundation

In 2000-2001 AWO members Janet Misamore and Gwen Reiber were taking Russian lessons from teacher, Jamila Aliyeva. They learned that Jamila had a 6 year old son who had cancer and passed away. Besides teaching Russian, Jamila spent her time at the Moscow Pediatric Oncology Institute helping support the children and their parents because they had been a part of her life for quite some time. Jamila decided that she wanted to do more for these families and with the help of AWO members Janet and Gwen, along with Professor Georgy Mentkevich, formed the Nastenka Foundation in 2002. The AWO has been helping support the needs of the children and their parents since 2002 with the annual AWO Craft Fair along with donations of food, detergents, and toiletries for the mothers and gifts for the children. We continue to support these children and parents by the love and smiles we show as we visit the hospital through our Sunshine Committee.

Ronald McDonald House built a kitchen in the hospital and we like to keep it filled with food and cleaning items that the mothers need daily. Please choose from the list below and if possible, bring your item(s) to any monthly general meeting at the Hard Rock Café or contact Morven, Anne, or Amy to arrange for pick up.

Here is the list of items needed:
Size 3 diapers
Small shampoos and lotions from hotel visits
Tide (powder)
Large trash bags
Dish soap
Flour (in a Ziploc bag please)
Sugar
Rice
Sunflower Oil
Pasta
Crackers and Cookies (no cream or chocolate please)
Black tea
Small juice boxes (anything except red juice please)

Monetary Donations:
Please remember that if you are unable to shop for needed items, a cash donation is always welcome at the Nastenka Foundation, as there is an ongoing need to purchase medicine for the children and unforeseen expenses for the parents. To help collect any cash donations look for our Nastenka Basket at every meeting. The basket will be on the table near the coffee, to collect any donations you would like to make. This past month over 7000 rubles was donated. Thank you so much ladies!!!

Book Club - Meet monthly on 4th Thursday to discuss great books. Leader: Lorri Tsarev.
Bridge - Good times and good gossip. Leader: Lori Wallette.
Bunko - Play Bunko! Leader: Bobbie Willson.
Crocheting and Stitching - Bring your favorite project and join us for coffee and chat. Leader: Mary Deathe.
Cross Country Skiing - This group begins in January. Enjoy the snow on top of skis. Chat with friends as you move through a winter wonderland. Beginner and intermediate groups. Leader: Robin Snow.
Daring Diners - Join other couples monthly and try out new restaurants. Leaders: Megan Moates and Meghna Sood.
Galloping Gourmet - Cook and enjoy meals at different homes. Leader: Meghna Sood.
Go Moscow - Visit museums and other interesting sites around Moscow with friends. Leaders: Megan Moates.
Gourmet Nooners - Join us for lunch at new restaurants once a month. Leader: Giselle Auzenne.
Indian Cooking - 1-2 times a month on Monday's or Thursday's. Leader: Meghna Sood.
International Cooking - Once a month learn how to cook different recipes from all over the world at a friend’s house. Leader: Paola Marquez.
Knitting - Meet once a week. Leader: Meghna Sood.
Mahjong - Great game, great friends. Leader: Amy Prahar.
Nordic Walking - Once a week. Leader: Robin Snow.
Quilting Group (City Center) - Please join us for a day of sewing, sharing, and friendship. We welcome all levels, beginners to experienced. Even if you don’t quilt, but you sew or do some sort of needle-craft, please join us! Leader: Susan Lutzke.
Scrabble - What a great game to hone your mind, and to just plain have fun! Leader: Amber Sessions.
Scrapbooking - A chance to sit down and preserve memories. Kim Bakaev.
Scrapbooking - Weekends only - A chance to sit down and preserve memories. Ali Gary.
Spades for Couples - Bring your partners, play Spades, eat appetizers and have fun. Leader: Harolyn Rose.
Spread Sunshine (Moscow Pediatric Oncology Hospital) - Deliver needed items to the children and their parents. Visit and entertain the children with books and art activities to give parents a break. Amy Prahar and Anne Kurek.
Tennis - Play tennis once a week. Leader: Alexandra Kalugin.
Understanding Russian and Russias (Rosinka) - Learn about the history of Russia and Russian culture in Rosinka. Leader: Gloria Faulds.
Understanding Russia (City Center) - Learn about the history & culture of Russia. Taught by a Russian National. Fun, informative and in English. Leader: Harolyn Rose.
Neighborhood Walking Tours - Explore Moscow’s favorite neighborhoods. Leader: Valentina Markusova.
